Micro - organisms: Friends and Foes


Important definitions
  • Micro-organisms – Living organisms that are invisible to the naked eyes but are visible under the microscope are called microorganisms.
  • Microbiology – Study of microorganisms are known as microbiology.
  • Fermentation – An anaerobic process through which carbohydrates are converted into acids and carbon dioxide by microorganisms like yeast is called fermentation.
  • Effluent – Bacteria that are used the biological treatment of sewage and industrial waste called effluent.
  • Bio-augmentation – The process of treatment of sewage waste and industrial waste through some bacteria. This process is called bio augmentation.
  • Antibiotic – Antibiotic are the chemicals produced by the microorganisms that inhibit the growth of harmful organisms in our body.
  • Antibody – Antibody are proteins produced by the special kind of blood cells to identify and destroy microbes like bacteria, viruses, etc.
  • Immunity – Immunity is the natural ability of an organism to have an inbuilt mechanisms to resist and destroy the infection that some microorganisms may cause.
  • Pathogens – Disease causing harmful organisms are known as pathogens.
  • Toxins – A poisonous substance produced by living organisms is called toxins.
  • Communicable disease – Communicable disease are the disease which can spread from an infected person to healthy person.
  • Food poisoning – Food poisoning is disease that results from the consumption of contaminated food.
  • Food preservation – Food preservation is the process of treating and handling the food so as to stop or greatly slow down, spoilage caused or accelerated by microorganisms.
  • Rancidity – Rancidity means having disagreeable odour, or taste due to decomposition of oils and fats.
  • Biogeochemical – A pathway for cycling of nutrients between the biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem.
  • Rancid – An unpleasant taste or odour caused by chemical changes or decomposition.
